Microsoft’s Mojang Acquisition Means More Than Just Money
Microsoft is buying Mojang, the makers of Minecraft, for $2.5 billion. That’s really impressive when you consider that Mojang has only been around since 2009. The deal is the latest step in a recent triumph of platform companies

The Top ROBLOX Twitch Streamers of August
img Summer is always a great time at ROBLOX — there’s more time to build, more time to play, and, as was the case this year, more time to do both of those things live on Twitch . While many of us are back in the school-year routine, we can still take a nostalgic and fond look back at the month of August — wherein we collectively set a new record, with 5,105,200 minutes (that’s 85,086 hours) of live ROBLOX action watched — to see which of the 1,900 ROBLOX streamers did it best.

We’re Coming to Orlando, Portland and Maryland This Weekend
As we announced on the blog a few weeks ago , members of our community will be hosting ROBLOX booths this weekend at Maker Faires in Orlando, Portland and Maryland. Because all three events had more than 20 community volunteers (!), we’re also sending staff members to each of the three events. Whether you signed up to help run the booth or not, you can visit us at any of these locations — and pick up a card that you can redeem for an exclusive virtual Maker Faire top hat while you’re there!

Berezaa Brings Co-op Gameplay to Tycoons — and Cashes In
Following yesterday’s exciting announcement that we have now paid more than $500,000 to ROBLOX game developers, we thought now would be a great time to highlight one of the top-earning game makers of the summer: berezaa. His game, 2-Player Gun Factory Tycoon , seemingly came out of nowhere and quickly shot (heh) to the top of our game charts, earning the once-unknown developer throngs of fans and several million ROBUX. With the success of the game, he’s converting his virtual earnings to cash to supplement his life and eventually pay for higher education.

ROBLOX University Launches Alongside Game Creation Challenge
img The games made by our community are the heart and soul of ROBLOX. While we want as many people as possible to contribute to our creative ecosystem, there is a slight learning curve for the first-time game maker. With that in mind, we’ve launched ROBLOX University , a month-long game development event featuring a pair of video tutorial series and a virtual campus where budding game creators can hang out and test their knowledge (and earn prizes for acing quizzes). Becoming a ROBLOX University student is simple. You don’t have to enroll. You don’t have to pay tuition. You just have to want to learn to build and script games!

ROBLOX Community Raises Over $6,000 for ALS Research
img Time to give yourselves a round of applause, ROBLOX players, because you all did something awesome! A couple weeks ago we encouraged ROBLOX players to purchase the special in-game Ice Bucket gear as part of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. We promised to donate the proceeds of the sales to the ALS Association for research toward a cure. The community responded strongly — and more so than it has for any prior charity event. Nearly 60,000 people purchased an Ice Bucket, and we received hundreds of videos of ROBLOXians doing the Ice Bucket Challenge in game and in real life. Awesome work, guys!

Use New API to Implement Mobile In-Game Video Ads
[Update: developers who use this feature now earn one ROBUX per five ad impressions, rather than 20. Read on for more information!] In an ongoing effort to give our developers features that they can use to earn ROBUX off their game creation efforts, we’re proud to present a great new earning technique: in-game mobile video ads. Starting now, game creators are able to utilize a new API that allows their game to display a video ad to mobile players on supported iOS and Android devices. And, as with most of our features, the creative control and deployment of this particular addition will be entirely up to you, our builders and developers. Let’s talk a bit about the ramifications of this feature, and go over some best practices when implementing it in your game.
