Expanded Water Properties
At ROBLOX we are constantly looking to improve our tools and technology so you can make better games and experiences. A big part of our development process is iteration: constantly making updates and additions to features already implemented. Last year we released Smooth Terrain ( Recently Stickmasterluke announced some major improvements to the smooth terrain tool kit ( https://blog.haydz6.com/2015/12/smooth-terrain-and-new-horizons/ bringing even more power and potential to the creations on ROBLOX. Yet, there is still another important feature we want everyone to know about: Water Properties!

Looking Forward to 2016
Dear ROBLOX Community – 2015 has been a transformative year for ROBLOX. Our developer community has raised the quality bar with stunningly imaginative games that are attracting more and more players. We’ve built out the ROBLOX team with many amazing hires. And our growth has accelerated over the course of the year. We hit 250,000 simultaneous players on 12/23/2015, and we are seeing over 50% growth in new players vs. last year. We are solidly profitable and are forging aggressive plans in 2016 to expand our vision of Powering Imagination™. ROBLOX has always been about unleashing the imagination of our community. We provide millions of players with the opportunity to experience amazing things with their friends. As we plan for the future, we will continue to focus on being THE place where you and your friends can do anything you can imagine — play games, create adventures, visualize and learn, roleplay, or just hang out and have fun. Technology has been improving storytelling and communication for over 2,000 years, but the capability to support shared experiences is relatively new on the human time scale.

Smooth Terrain and New Horizons
We’ve got some new and exciting updates for you! Since Smooth Terrain’s release back in May, we’ve seen the quality and immersion of worlds on Roblox soar. To keep up with the overwhelming use of the tools, we’ve made a few upgrades. These updates give the tools new functionality, make them easier to use, and make them more fun to play with. Lets dive in! Something simple we added to help speed up workflow, is the material picker. When using any of the brush tools, you can easily select materials from the terrain itself by holding Alt and clicking on the terrain. This allows you to quickly sample different materials while staying in the flow of painting and shaping.

Nominations for the 2015 BLOXY Awards are Open!
The 2015 BLOXY Awards , a celebration of the talented creators in our community, takes place on January 16, 2016. This livestreamed event honors and showcases the coolest ROBLOX games and places, the funniest videos, the most impressive groups, and more. In years past we’ve held separate awards for games and video content, but this year we decided to combine them, and expand them, making the 2015 BLOXYs the biggest award ceremony we’ve ever done. Nominations for this year’s awards are now officially open, and you can elect your favorite games, groups, videos and more. The link to the entry form is down below, and nominations are open until Sunday, December 13 . Two categories, Breakout Game and Best Update need to be for games that were either created/updated in 2015. This is also true for art and videos. For EVERY other award category, all games are eligible. To nominate a game, YouTube video, piece of art, or whatever, simply copy paste the URL into the entry form in the corresponding box. The image below provides a guideline. Got it? Pretty easy! You don’t need to nominate entries in every category, so no worries there. But you can only nominate once so make sure you fill in everything you want before you submit. Forgot the categories? Check the announcement blog for a refresher . And that’s about it. Have fun nominating entries, and if you’re a content creator we highly encourage you to promote yourself and your content (more nominations mean more likelihood you’ll be a finalist!) Use the hashtag #BLOXYAwards and join the discussion!

New Humanoid Properties: Custom Jump Height and Climbing Angle
ROBLOX characters have super powers. They can jump higher than they are tall and can climb up any hill, no matter how steep. Up until now, game creators had no easy way to control these powers. While this may be appropriate for some games, many game creators have been asking for a way to let them set how humanoid characters behave in their worlds. Some creators looking to disable jumping all together, while others seek to simulate low gravity moon physics, some have expressed a desire to use unclimbable high hills to direct characters down certain paths.

Giftsplosion 2015 is Upon Us!
The holidays are here, and ROBLOX is getting all festive with 12 days of awesome prizes! You may have noticed a mysterious gift appearing in your inventory and the catalog lately. These are the first prizes in the 12 Days of the 2015 “Giftsplosion.” Here’s how it works: for each of the first 12 days of December, a gift will appear in the ROBLOX inventory. Some gifts will be for meeting past requirements – such as playing ROBLOX a lot for the last 30 days – while others will contain clues on how you can earn them. If you complete the task, the gift box will be awarded to you (sometime after the deadline, usually a couple days). After the gift box is awarded, it goes on sale in the catalog, so everyone has the opportunity to snag it. A day or so after each gift box goes off sale, it opens, awarding you a special prize For those of you that remember last couple Giftsplosions, there will be not one, but TWO “badger” gift boxes, which will be attached to earning badges in different ROBLOX games. One of them is going to be really difficult though! Want a clue on the next gift? Maybe check your settings and see if your email is verified … We’ll be giving out clues for some of the other gifts here on the blog, as well as on our Twitter and Facebook pages , so now’s a good time to go follow them!

New Shadows Bring More Realistic Effects to Humanoids
ROBLOX is all about iteration. Whenever we work on any features – including all rendering features – we usually have a vision for the future, like how ROBLOX games will look on different platforms in a few years – and then we take bite-sized pieces of this vision and execute it. Shadows are no exception. Since time immemorial, ROBLOX supported character shadows via a technique known as stencil shadows. This resulted in nice hard-edged shadows that followed the character geometry perfectly. However, the technique had several issues – it was not very fast, it was not very robust – on some character meshes you could see strange inverted shadows – and, most importantly, it was hard to integrate it with our lighting solution.
