When you spawn in to LoneTraveler’s showcase, The Forgotten Hold, the first thing you see is the lights shining through the cracks of the windows. The light sets a truly haunting mood and immediately you come to realize just why LoneTraveler’s game is titled “The Forgotten Hold”.

I love how incredibly detailed this showcase is. From the small particles of dust you can see floating in the light to the vines trailing up the side of the wall, it really seems no detail was forgotten. (Unlike the Hold itself.) If you travel deeper into the showcase you stumble upon a room which is very reminiscent of a temple. It’s slowly decaying, though the light shines down on the alter in the middle.

LoneTraveler has done an amazing job of creating a lonely and dark, yet beautiful, atmosphere. The dark tones in the colors really set up the scene quite nicely, but the added touch of light gives you just enough visibility to really see all the decaying detail. We spoke with LoneTraveler about this game and learned more about his process!

ROBLOX: About how long did it take you to make The Forgotten Hold?

LoneTraveler: I first started on the spawn room, which I spent around 6 hours straight building. After I built that room, I felt like I was missing something. That’s when I thought up the second room. I spent a couple of weeks working on it, a couple of hours every few days. In all, the development process ended up being around two weeks, or a total of 15 hours worth of studio work.

How exactly did you go about making The Forgotten Hold? What were some of your main techniques you used?

My plan for making The Forgotten Hold was to start by making a completely intact, well looking fortress. After that construction was complete, I destroyed the place, and overgrew it. My normal techniques were to make some random cut outs with Union, and put them in random spots, hoping it would blend well. If it didn’t, I’d revert what I had done, and try a different area.

Any interesting facts about this game in particular?

There’s a few Easter eggs hidden in the game, and plenty more in development.

Where did you get the idea to make this games through ROBLOX Studio?

I’ve always had an interest in medieval architecture. A few years ago, I would always write books that had to do with ancient architecture, and exploration through ruins. I’ve always had to plan to make this showcase, but I just never got around to it, and felt that I didn’t have the skill to make what I dreamed of. One day, I decided I’d sit down all day, and just build. The outcome is what stands before us today.

What got you into building on ROBLOX in the first place?

Ever since I first joined back in 2009, I’ve always wanted to be a great developer. It wasn’t until around 2013 I began building. My first build I did was called “The Lonely Dojo”. It was before Solid Modeling came out, and I remember spending hours on getting the correct rotation for the roof curvature. After that, I had fallen in love with building, and have been doing it ever since.

Did any other builders on ROBLOX inspire you?

Back in 2014, I visited Asimo3089’s showcase called “Sundown”. Back when I saw it, I was fascinated by the ambiance and use of lighting and fog. I remember thinking “Someday, I’d like to build like this.” Ever since then, I’ve been spending most of my time on ROBLOX developing.

Do you have tips for other builders who want to make games similar to yours?

Make sure you have a lot of patience. It requires a large amount of time to get the right shape for the unions, and tons of experimentation in different shaping the structures.

What game has been your favorite to create? Which do you think took you the longest?

I’ve had the most fun making “The Forgotten Hold” so far, and it definitely took the longest. This is my first showcase, and I plan on making many more.

Anything our users can look forward to from you in the future?

I’m teaming up with a few different groups to make some games and showcases. We’ve got some major plans for the future. I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to it.

Look forward to LoneTraveler’s upcoming showcases! And be sure to check out The Forgotten Hold, on ROBLOX today!
