Friends and Followers Makes ROBLOX More Social, and Even More Fun

ROBLOX has more than 4.5 million active players every month. Many of you have told us that you would like a more comprehensive social experience. You would like to be able to play and join games with your Friends. You would like to be able to gauge how you’re doing, in any game, in relation to your Friends. You would like to be able to create games with these social aspects in mind. Basically, you’ve told us that friends should be able to play and compete with one another – easily. Friends and Followers is a new way of making social connections on ROBLOX, and a feature that lays the groundwork for these exciting social gameplay and game development possibilities.

What is a Friend?

Friends are established when two ROBLOX users mutually agree to friendship. At the launch of Friends and Followers, you can have a maximum of 200 Friends. This scale makes it easier for you and your Friends to play together in public games and VIP Servers, and will allow us to release useful Friend-based features in the future (see “Why did we transition to Friends and Followers?” for more on this).

What is a Follower?

A Follower, on the other hand, is established when one person chooses to follow the activity of another user. Think of this like following someone you find interesting, such as a popular game creator, on a social network. It’s an easy way to stay up to date on what your favorite developers are playing and making. You can follow an unlimited number of players.

What happened to my previous Best Friends and Friends?

Not to worry, they’re all still here — you didn’t lose anyone! We increased the limit on Best Friends to 200 in October to ease everyone into this new look for friendships. Here’s what happened today:

  • Anyone who was a mutual Best Friend prior to today is now a Friend
  • Anyone who was a non-mutual Best Friend or a Friend prior to today is now a Follower

You are also now a Follower of anyone who was a Friend prior to this update.

Why did we transition to Friends and Followers?

You, the ROBLOX community, have told us that friends should be able to play and compete with one another – easily. We’ve already made inroads by launching VIP Servers, which you can now set to be Friends-only (rather than manually white-listing specific people) with the launch of Friends and Followers.

The Friends and Followers system creates more meaningful connections between ROBLOX members. It also unlocks possibilities for other cool features, such as:

  • An intelligent feed that can filter between Friends and Followers
  • Friend-only leaderboards
  • A more robust partying system for players
  • A developer API for leveraging players’ Friend and Follower networks
  • Recommendations based on what your friends are playing and purchasing

Guest Quest is a great, new dungeon crawler to play with friends.

How do I manage my Friends and Followers?

You can manage (i.e., add or remove) your Friends list by visiting your Friends page. We have added a new Followers tab to this page to manage the people you follow.

Once you’ve reached the maximum of 200 Friends, you will not be able to send further requests until you remove an existing Friend. You will continue to receive Friend requests – however, before accepting any, you will need to reduce your existing Friend count to less than 200.

To follow another player, simply visit their profile page and click the new “Follow” button.

As always, you can control who can send you Friend requests and whether people can follow you in your Account Settings.
